BFA UArts

This original BFA degree is displayed as an artifact after the university unexpectedly closed
together with many others. The piece is repositioned in a conceptual framework where I
invite viewers to reflect and question: what is the role of art institutions today? Are they
schools, sanctuaries or places where ideas are generated? What legitimacy do they have if
any, and what does this say about any cultural institution?
COMMODIFICATION OF ABSENCE

In “The Commodification of Absence”, the label becomes the primary vessel of meaning, not
the image, forcing the viewer to take for granted the institutional authority of the label. I
turned the canvas into a meta- commentary of art’s systems. It critiques the art world’s
reliance on documentation, meta-data and provenance as value generators, and mimics
something real while containing nothing thus becoming something. It illustrates institutional
framing over image, belief, expectation and market fiction.
RECURSIVE VIEWING

Recursive Viewing is about refusal and presence through absence. I have refused to show
what a viewer expects to see, an image. The back of the frame has become the subject and
by photographing and reinstalling it in physical space it loops back into its original reference.
It’s an image and an anti- image at the same time.
